Fact Sheet - Three Regions Collection - Fattoria Montecchio
Fattoria Montecchio is our Tuscan oil from the Chianti region that we have selected to include in our famous three regions collection. It has won gold and silver awards in the ‘Great Taste Awards’ and is a strong general purpose oil that will be wonderful on most dishes.
It enhances meats, game and traditional Tuscan dishes like bruschetta. Its nutty flavour makes it a great oil to drizzle over your favourite salad and its peppery finish makes it excellent on tomatoes.
Fattoria Montecchio oil is friendly, full yet sophisticated and enshrines the epitome of Tuscan hospitality. The Estate sits proudly on a hill not far from the busy Sienna Florence highway.
It has stood here for four hundred years and it’s dark rich land has produced fine wines and oils for its various proprietors over these centuries and probably from long before. It has belonged to the present owner for over 30 years.
The magnificent noble house is surrounded by small buildings where the employees live and where the oil and wine is made and stored.
The olive groves stretch from the entrance up to the main buildings. The trees grow in the natural way. They are never treated with chemicals and
careful yearly pruning keeps them in shape to be hand harvested each November.
The local schools turn out to watch the old olive press in motion. In a beautifully restored building the owner Ivo Nuti, a gracious Tuscan gentleman, has put back into use an old stone olive crusher where the granite wheels roll around a granite base plate and crush the whole fruit to a paste, then its racked in pressing stacks and slowly put under pressure to squeeze the oil out.
The oil is stored in the cellars in traditional terra cotta jars. The jars are also made on the premises where they have a kiln for making traditional hand made terra cotta.
This grove produces about 8,000 litres a year of the most perfectly traditional, high quality Tuscan oil.
It’s not filtered, the olives are not chemically treated, its made and processed right here. The people that make it are truly proud of what they do.
For as far as the eye can see around the house are olive trees that have produced precious oil for hundreds and hundreds of years and it’s still harvested, produced, stored and bottled entirely in house.
